What happens when you land at Schiphol, and how to get from the airport to your accommodation.

After landing

Schiphol is large but well signed. Follow the signs to passport control, then baggage reclaim, then customs and the arrivals hall. Queues at border control vary, so be patient.

Before you leave the airport

  • Have your passport and any documents ready.
  • Withdraw a little cash from a cash machine, and check your bank's fees.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi or arrange mobile data.
  • Note the address of your accommodation.

Getting into the city

  • Train. The station is beneath the terminal. Trains run to Amsterdam Central Station in about 15 to 20 minutes. It is usually the quickest and cheapest option.
  • Bus. Services run to various parts of the city.
  • Taxi or ride app. Convenient with heavy bags, but noticeably more expensive.

Baggage and delays

If your bag does not arrive, report it at the airline desk before you leave the baggage hall, and keep the reference number. Delivery to your accommodation is usually arranged.

Tickets

You can buy train tickets at machines or the desk, and many services accept contactless payment. Follow the instructions at the station, and keep your ticket for the exit.

Common surprises

  • Long walks between the gate and passport control.
  • Busy train ticket machines, so allow a few minutes.
  • Cold, wet weather even in shoulder months.

Leaving the country

Do not carry cannabis through the airport. It is illegal to take it across a border, and airports have detection. Finish what you buy, or leave it behind.

First day

Keep it easy. Drop your bags, have a meal and go to bed at a normal time to beat jet lag. See first-timer advice and how to get around.
