A relaxed three-day plan for a first visit, mixing canals, museums, neighbourhoods and free time, with optional coffeeshop stops.

How to use this plan

Three days is enough to see the highlights if you keep to one area a day. Swap days around to fit the weather, and book popular museums ahead. Times are suggestions, not rules.

Day 1: The historic centre

  • Morning. Walk the canal ring from Central Station towards Dam Square.
  • Afternoon. Take a canal cruise, and have lunch away from the busiest streets.
  • Evening. Dinner, then a quiet drink or a coffeeshop visit if you like. See our directory.

Day 2: Museums and Jordaan

  • Morning. One major museum, booked in advance.
  • Afternoon. Wander the Jordaan's small streets, galleries and cafes.
  • Evening. A meal in the neighbourhood, and an early night.

Day 3: De Pijp and Noord

  • Morning. Browse the market in De Pijp and have a slow breakfast.
  • Afternoon. Take the free ferry to Noord for a different view of the city.
  • Evening. A last dinner, and pack for the journey home.

Tips

  • Do not rush the first day. Jet lag is real.
  • Walk and take trams, and be careful with bikes.
  • Keep the day light if you plan to visit a coffeeshop. See how to order.
  • Use the route planner to order stops.

If it rains

Amsterdam has plenty of indoor options. Swap the canal walk for a museum, spend longer over lunch in a cafe, or take a covered canal cruise. Rain often passes quickly, so keep a light waterproof with you and be ready to change the order of the day.
