How to get from the airport into the city and move around Amsterdam by train, tram, metro, ferry, bike or on foot.

Getting from the airport

Schiphol Airport is close to the city. Trains run to Amsterdam Central Station, and the journey takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Trains are frequent and usually the quickest and cheapest option. Buses and taxis are also available, but taxis cost noticeably more.

Trams, metro and buses

The city's public transport is run mostly by GVB. Trams cover the centre and most neighbourhoods, and the metro links the outer areas. You can pay with a transport card or, on many services, a contactless bank card or phone. Check in when you board and check out when you leave, where a reader is provided. Rules and fares change, so check the operator's website for current details.

The free ferries

Ferries run behind Central Station across the water to Amsterdam Noord. They are free for foot passengers and cyclists and are a pleasant way to see the harbour.

Walking

The centre is compact and pleasant to walk. Streets are narrow and cobbled, and bridges can be steep, so wear comfortable shoes. Watch for bikes, trams and scooters, and stay off the red bike lanes.

Cycling

Bikes are the local way to travel, and rental shops are easy to find. Cycle lanes are extensive, but the traffic is busy and fast. Follow the rules, use lights after dark and lock your bike well. See bike rental shops on Dam Guide.

Taxis and ride apps

Taxis are available at ranks and through apps. They cost more than public transport and can be slow in central traffic. Agree the price or check the meter before you set off.

Which to choose

  • From the airport: the train to Central Station.
  • Across the centre: walk or take a tram.
  • To Noord: the free ferry.
  • A longer day out: a bike, or a train to another town.
