A five-day plan that adds day trips to the city highlights, with room to rest.
The shape of the trip
Five days lets you see the city at an easier pace and add a day trip or two. Use the first three days for Amsterdam itself, and the last two for a change of scene. Follow our three-day plan for the city days.
Days 1 to 3: Amsterdam
- Day 1: the canal ring and the old centre.
- Day 2: a major museum and the Jordaan.
- Day 3: De Pijp, its market and the free ferry to Noord.
Day 4: A day trip
Choose one of these, all reachable by public transport.
- Haarlem. A pretty historic town with a market square.
- Zaanse Schans. Windmills and traditional houses to the north of the city.
- Utrecht or Rotterdam. Larger cities with their own character. See our day-trip guide.
- Tulip season. In spring, the bulb fields and a large flower garden draw many visitors. Check dates and tickets.
Day 5: Slow day
Leave the last day loose. Revisit a favourite spot, shop for souvenirs, sit on a terrace and pack. See coffeeshop terraces.
Pacing yourself
Five days is a long stretch of sightseeing. Alternate busy days with lighter ones, and do not schedule two big things in one afternoon. Leave the evenings free for a relaxed dinner, and go to bed at a sensible time so you have energy for the next morning.
Practical tips
- Book the biggest sights and trains in advance where possible.
- Check the weather, and carry a light waterproof.
- Keep cannabis to a small, safe amount, and do not take it out of the country.
- Use the route planner for a walking or cycling day.
Where to stay
A single base in the city works for the whole trip. See where to stay.
