The Netherlands is small and well connected by train. Here is how to plan a day trip from Amsterdam, and what to know about cannabis rules in other towns.
Easy by train
Trains link Amsterdam with nearby towns quickly and often. A day trip is simple to arrange, and you do not need a car. Check timetables and fares on the national rail website or an app before you go.
Haarlem
A charming historic town close to Amsterdam, with a compact centre, canals and a market square. It is a relaxed alternative to the capital and easy to explore on foot.
Utrecht
A lively university city with old canals, sunken wharfs and plenty of cafés. It makes a good day out, and the train ride is short.
Rotterdam
A modern city with striking architecture, a large harbour and a busy food scene. It feels very different from Amsterdam and is worth a full day.
Cannabis rules differ
- Local authorities decide how tolerance works in each town, so rules and coffeeshop numbers differ.
- Some towns limit sales to residents. Check before you travel.
- The same limits apply everywhere: 18 and over, no more than 5 grams a day.
- Do not take cannabis back to Amsterdam if the local rules do not allow it, and never across a border.
Planning tips
- Leave early and check the last train back.
- Bring ID and some cash.
- Do not drive or cycle after using cannabis.
- Check opening hours, which differ from Amsterdam.
Getting the most from a day
Pick one town rather than trying two. Start with a stroll through the centre, have lunch, and leave time to sit and watch the town go by. Most of the towns are compact, so you rarely need more than a few hours to see the highlights.
Nearer to home
If you would rather stay close, explore areas within the city. See our area pages, and read which neighbourhood suits you.
