What potency numbers mean, why the same amount can feel very different from person to person, and how to pick an amount that suits you.

A number with limits

Menus and labels often show a THC percentage. It is a useful hint about strength, but it is not the whole story. Two people can use the same product and feel quite different effects, and the same person can feel different on different days.

What affects how strong it feels

  • The product. Concentrates are stronger than flower, and some strains are more potent than others.
  • The method. Edibles are slower and can feel much stronger. See how the methods differ.
  • Your body. Weight, metabolism, sleep and food all play a part.
  • Experience. Regular users often need more, and beginners need much less.
  • Mood and setting. Stress and surroundings shape the experience.

Why more is not always better

A very strong product can bring unwanted effects such as anxiety, dizziness and confusion. A milder choice is often more enjoyable, particularly in a busy city with lots going on.

Finding your level

  1. Begin with a small amount, such as a couple of puffs.
  2. Wait at least five to ten minutes.
  3. Only take more if you feel you want it.
  4. Keep a note of what worked for you.

Tell the budtender

Say how experienced you are and what you want. Ask for something mild if you are unsure. Good staff will guide you honestly. See how to order.

Signs you have had enough

Feeling dizzy, anxious, very tired or unusually warm are signs to stop. Sit down, drink water and let it pass before deciding on anything more.

Do not mix

Mixing cannabis with alcohol raises the risk of feeling unwell. Avoid combining different products in one session.
