The two best-known compounds in cannabis do different things. Here is what each one is and why the balance matters when you choose.
The two you will hear about
Cannabis contains many compounds, and two of them appear on almost every label. Understanding them makes menus easier to read and helps you choose something that suits you.
THC
THC is the main compound responsible for the high. It affects mood, perception and coordination. Higher THC generally means a stronger effect, which can be enjoyable for experienced users and overwhelming for beginners.
CBD
CBD does not cause a high. It is found in varying amounts in different plants. Some people find products with more CBD feel gentler or more balanced. Research is still developing, so avoid claims about specific benefits.
The balance
- High THC, little CBD. Strong and intoxicating. Best for experienced users.
- Balanced THC and CBD. Often milder and more even.
- High CBD, little THC. Little or no high.
Reading a label
- Percentages show how much of each compound is in the flower by weight.
- A number is a guide, not a promise, because it varies between batches and tests.
- Menus in coffeeshops do not always list CBD. Ask staff.
Choosing
- If you are new, ask for something with modest THC or a balanced product.
- Do not assume more is better.
- Consider aroma and how you want to feel, not only the number.
Safety
Effects vary between people. Start with a small amount, wait and do not drive or cycle. If you take medication or have a health condition, speak to a doctor first.
