Sitting outside is one of the best parts of a coffeeshop visit. Here is what to look for in a terrace and how to find one.

Why a terrace is worth finding

A terrace gives you fresh air, people-watching and room to relax without the closeness of an indoor room. On a mild day it can be the best seat in the city. Terraces range from a few pavement chairs to a garden or a canalside spot with a view.

What to look for

  • Sun or shade. Check which way the seats face at the time you plan to go.
  • Space. Some terraces are tiny and fill quickly. Arrive early for a table.
  • Setting. A canal, a quiet square or a garden makes a different mood from a busy street.
  • Heating. Some shops use heaters or blankets, which extends the season into cooler months.
  • House rules. Rules about smoking outside vary by shop and street. Ask staff before you light up.

Etiquette

  • Buy a drink or a snack, since terrace seating is for customers.
  • Keep your voice down, especially in residential streets.
  • Do not leave rubbish behind, and use the ashtrays.
  • Follow any instructions on where you may smoke.

When to go

Late morning and early afternoon are usually quieter, and warm evenings fill up fast. Weather changes quickly, so keep a light jacket with you.
