Simple habits that make a coffeeshop visit more pleasant and help you avoid feeling unwell.

The basics matter most

Most unpleasant experiences come down to a few simple things: taking too much, going too fast, or not looking after yourself. A few good habits make a big difference to how you feel.

Eat first

Have a proper meal before you go, and keep a snack with you. An empty stomach makes everything feel stronger and less comfortable. Something sweet or salty often helps afterwards.

Drink water

Cannabis can leave you with a dry mouth, and it is easy to forget to drink. Sip water regularly. Avoid heavy drinking on top, which raises the chances of feeling ill.

Take it slowly

  • Start with a small amount.
  • Wait at least several minutes between puffs, and much longer with edibles.
  • Do not chase the feeling, or take more because you feel nothing yet.

Pick a comfortable place

Sit down somewhere calm, with people you trust. A relaxed setting helps, and a crowded or stressful one can make things harder. Be near a toilet and somewhere you can rest.

If you feel unwell

  • Sit or lie down and breathe slowly.
  • Drink water and eat a little.
  • Tell a friend or the staff.
  • Remember that it will pass.
  • If you have chest pain, difficulty breathing or feel very unwell, call 112.

Look after each other

If you are with friends, check in on each other. Agree a plan for getting home, and keep an eye on anyone who seems unwell. It is always fine to stop early.

Afterwards

  • Do not drive or cycle.
  • Take a tram or a taxi, or walk, back to your accommodation.
  • Get a good night's sleep.
