A short, practical list of what to bring for an Amsterdam trip, plus what to leave at home.
The essentials
- Passport or ID. You need a valid photo ID for the trip itself, and coffeeshops ask for it at the door.
- A debit card and some cash. Many places prefer cards, but coffeeshops and some small shops often want cash. See our note on paying in Amsterdam.
- A power adapter. The Netherlands uses the European two-pin plug and 230 volt sockets. Check that your devices can handle that voltage.
- Comfortable shoes. The city is best explored on foot, and cobbled streets and canal bridges are hard on thin soles.
- A weatherproof layer. Rain can arrive at any time of year and the wind off the water is often cool.
- A phone with a charger or power bank. You will use maps and tickets all day.
Nice to have
- A small day bag that closes securely.
- A refillable water bottle. Tap water is safe to drink.
- A travel card holder or wallet for your transport card.
- Earplugs, if you are a light sleeper in a central hotel.
Leave at home
- Cannabis from elsewhere. Never carry it across a border, even between countries in Europe.
- Valuables you do not need. Pickpockets work in busy areas.
- Too many clothes. A few items that layer will do.
By season
- Summer. Light clothes, sunscreen and a layer for cool evenings.
- Winter. A warm coat, hat and gloves. Days are short and damp.
Before you leave
- Check the entry rules for your nationality.
- Book accommodation that fits your needs. Not all hotels allow smoking, so read the policy. See our stays near coffeeshops.
- Tell your bank you are travelling.
- Save an offline map of the city.
