Some coffeeshops have pool tables, board games or arcade machines. Here is how to find them and what to keep in mind.

More than a place to smoke

A few coffeeshops are set up as hangouts, with pool tables, games and music. They can be a good choice for a group, a rainy afternoon or someone who wants something to do besides sit. Facilities change, so check before you go.

What you may find

  • Pool tables. Usually free or cheap, but busy at peak times.
  • Board games and cards. Ask at the counter, as some shops keep them behind it.
  • Arcade or pinball machines. Less common but around.
  • Music and screens. Some shops show sport or play live DJs.

Finding one

Dam Guide lists coffeeshop features on each page. Start with the directory and look for shops with the amenities you want. You can also use the map to see what is nearby.

Tips for playing

  • Play at a relaxed pace. Coordination and judgement can be affected.
  • Do not gamble with money.
  • Be considerate of other groups, and take turns at busy tables.
  • Do not leave drinks or belongings on the game surfaces.
  • Ask staff before moving equipment.

Rainy-day plan

A games shop works well when the weather turns. Combine it with a nearby cafe or museum, and keep the plan flexible so you can change if a table is busy. Try the route planner to string a few stops together.

Groups

If you are visiting with friends, arrive early to get a table, and agree in advance who will stay sober enough to keep an eye on things. Always look after each other.

After the game

Do not drive or cycle. Plan how you will get back to your accommodation. Read house manners for more.
