April 20 is a global day of cannabis culture. Here is how to enjoy it in Amsterdam without getting caught out by crowds or rules.

The day

April 20, often written 4/20, is an informal celebration of cannabis culture. It is widely marked in many countries with gatherings, parties and special offers. In Amsterdam some venues and coffeeshops run promotions or events.

What to expect

  • Busier coffeeshops. Expect queues, especially in the afternoon and evening.
  • Special offers. Some shops run deals or events. They vary from year to year, so check with the shop.
  • Parties. Events and gatherings pop up, and some require tickets.

Plan ahead

  • Choose your shops in advance and check opening hours.
  • Go earlier in the day to avoid the peak crowds.
  • Bring photo ID and some cash.
  • Book a hotel early if you want to stay in the centre. See places to stay.

Keep it sensible

  • You may buy up to 5 grams a day. Do not ask for more.
  • Start with small amounts and drink water.
  • Avoid mixing with alcohol.
  • Do not smoke in restricted public areas.
  • Do not drive or cycle afterwards.

Getting around on the day

Trams and streets in the centre are busier than usual. Allow extra time, keep your phone charged and agree a meeting point with friends in case you get separated. Taxis can be hard to find in the evening, so plan how you will get back to your accommodation.

Something quieter

If crowds do not appeal, visit a shop in a residential neighbourhood, enjoy a terrace or take a relaxed day out. See our terraces and use the route planner to build a calmer day.

Events change every year. Check official sources and venues for the latest details.
